It’s often said the MLB season is a marathon and not a sprint. Well, about a month in and some unexpected sprinters have sped to the front of the race.

As many keeper league fantasy GMs can attest to, it’s been a long time coming for Byron Buxton. The Twins’ center fielder was on the verge of getting slapped with the “bust” tag after the second overall pick in the 2012 draft never quite lived up to all that prospect hype. He’s finally living up to all that hype and then some through the first 20 games of the season. Buxton is second to just MVP odds on favorite Mike Trout (+200), hitting a ridiculous .408 to Trout’s .413.

Unlike the Angels superstar and three-time MVP, Buxton was an afterthought on the odds board just over a month ago. Thanks to his batting average, eight homers (T-2nd in AL), 15 RBI, and 17 runs, the 27-year-old has rocketed right behind Trout as the second favorite at +850.

The biggest question with Buxton is always health. He’s only played more than 92 games once in five full seasons.

Trout’s teammate Shohei Ohtani is another player who leaped on the scene with a ton of hype in 2018. Like Buxton, Ohtani had trouble staying healthy in his first three seasons. So far, so good in 2021 as the Japanese superstar is doing things that have never been done before.

First off, he’s been hitting in the same game’s he’s the starting pitcher. Second, he threw a 100 mph pitch in the same inning he hit a home run. Third, he’s doing both things well.

Ohtani is tied with Buxton and others for second in the AL with eight home runs while also in the top-ten with 20 RBI and tied for second with six stolen bases.

On the mound, Shohei is 1-0 in three starts with a 3.29 ERA while averaging 1.7 strikeouts per inning. Put it all together, and the dual-threat is giving Trout some company on the bench and the odds board with a big jump up to +850 at FanDuel’s Sportsbook.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is trying to follow in his father’s footsteps. Senior took the AL’s top individual prize in the same colors Trout and Ohtani wear. Vladdy’s daddy won the 2004 American League MVP while patrolling the outfield for the Angels.

Junior is right in the mix with that pair of current Halos after a terrific start for the Toronto Blue Jays. Guerrero came into camp leaner and meaner this season, and it’s shown on the stat sheet. The Jays slugger is in the top-three in OPS, only trails Trout in OBP, and has seven homers, 20 RBI, and 18 runs. He’s jumped from outside of the top-ten at +3000 to in contention at +1000.

A third Angel opened the season a top contender for the award at +1800, but a disappointing start has sent Anthony Rendon out of the top ten at +5000.

Fellow AL West third basemen Matt Chapman has had an even more disappointing start. The A’s clean-up man is hitting under .200 to start the year and, like Rendon, is at +5000 from +1800.

Luis Robert may end up being out for the season with a Grade 3 hip flexor strain. The White Sox CF will be gone until at least July and has dropped from +2200 to +10000 odds.

Gleyber Torres is healthy but not hitting. The Yankees’ middle infielder has yet to hit a home run this season and dropped from the tenth best odds just over a month ago to next to Robert at +10000.

Remember, it’s a long-distance race, so much can and probably will change by the time we meet again in a month.
