Alabama Rolling Through SEC

Alabama rolled to a 78-60 victory over LSU at home on Wednesday as an 8.5-point favorite and had five players score in double figures.

Sophomore guard Jaden Shackelford topped the Crimson Tide with 19 points despite making just 7-of-16 field goal attempts. He has scored in double figures in eight of his last nine games and leads the team with a 13.8 average.

Freshman forward Juwan Gary turned in the best performance of his young career. He had a season-high 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals in just 14 minutes off the bench.

Senior forward Alex Reese continued his recent strong play with 13 points and two blocks. He has scored 28 points in the last two games after averaging 4.6 points in his first 17 games.

The contributions of Gary and Reese have been needed as senior forward Jordan Bruner is out indefinitely with a knee injury.

Gary can even score sitting down.

Freshman guard Jaden Quinerly and junior guard Keon Ellis each added 10 points. It was a career high for Quinerly while Ellis has 21 points in the last two games after averaging 3.7 points in his first 16 games.

Alabama won despite senior guard John Petty Jr. going just 3-of-9 from the floor and senior wing Herbert Jones being limited to 16 points because of foul trouble. Petty is averaging 13.2 points and 5.1 rebounds while Jones has averages of 12.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.8 steals.

Alabama, which is third in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency according to KenPom, held LSU to a season-low in points and 31% shooting while outrebounding the Tigers 51-35. LSU was averaging 82.9 points a game coming in.

The Tigers Surprise Season Continues

Picked to finish in 10th place in the preseason SEC poll, Missouri kept its winning ways going Wednesday by beating visiting Kentucky 75-70 as a 4.5-point favorite.

Senior guard Dru Smith scored a season-high 26 points, as he made 6-of-11 field goal attempts and 12-of-14 from the foul line.

He also had seven rebounds and five assists while scoring in double figures for the seventh straight game.

Junior guard Xavier Pinson scored 14 points and senior guard Mark Smith added 11, including three 3-pointers. Missouri shot 42.9% (9-of-21) on 3’s.

The Tigers showed their depth on a night when senior forward Jeremiah Tilmon was continually double and triple-teamed and held to 8 points and 5 rebounds. He had a combined 54 points and 21 rebounds in the previous two games.

Pinson is averaging a team-leading 15.1 points and 3.4 assists while taking 30.6% of Missouri’s shots. Smith has averaged 17.7 points in the last six games and has a season average of 13.9 to go with 3.2 assists and 1.8 steals.

Tilmon is averaging 13.7 points and 7.9 rebounds while grabbing 3.1 offensive boards a game and shooting 64.2%.

Split Last Season

The teams split two games last season with each winning at home, Alabama 88-74 as a 6.5-point favorite and Missouri 69-50 as a 2-point choice.

Petty led Alabama with 20 points in its win and Shackelford had a total of 30 points in the two games. Smith scored a combined 35 points and Mark Smith added 28.

Missouri is one of college basketball’s surprise teams this season. However, Alabama has proven to be the class of the SEC and will continue its march toward the conference title in this game.
