Pavlyuchenkova Matches Career-Best Tournament Result in Madrid

The 29-year was a quarterfinalist here in Madrid back in 2011, and has now matched her career-best tournament result at the tournament a full decade later. In just under three hours, she defeated 11th seed Jennifer Brady in a three set marathon, eventually winning 7-5, 6(8)-7(10), 6-3.

Prior to the start of this tournament, Pavlyuchenkova held a less than impressive 5-8 record on the year, and was 0-4 against Top 20 players. She has since knocked off two higher seeded opponents in the tournament, and recorded two Top 20 wins as well.

In her Round of 16 match, Pavlyuchenkova recorded 40 winners while committing 31 unforced errors in comparison to her opponent’s 32 winners and 37 unforced errors

Muchova’s Impressive Top 20 Start

The Czech made her Top 20 debut in the rankings just last week, and has continues to show us why. Muchova entered her Round of 16 match against Maria Sakkari coming off a three set win over Naomi Osaka. After just over two and a half hours, Muchova defeated Sakkari 6-0, 6(9)-7(11), 7-5 to earn her spot in the quarterfinals here in Madrid. With her win she remains undefeated against Top 20 ranked players this year.

The 24-year old dominated the first set not allowing Sakkari to even win a game, but when Muchova went up a break at 2-1 in the second set, Sakkari broke her to even it out at 2-2, and turned that second set into a battle.

The battle continued into the deciding set with six breaks of service. But Muchova was too much for the Greek, as she drew an error from Sakkari and converted one last service break to book her spot in the quarterfinals.

Head-to-Head & Best Bet

There’s not much to go off of as these two have only faced each other once before. Pavlyuchenkova won their one and only meeting in the semifinals at the Kremlin Cup in 2019 in three sets.

Pavlyuchenkova and Muchova play a fairly similar game. Both are well-rounded players, and very powerful. We’ve seen their strengths on both offense and defense this week.

We know that both players are coming off exhausting marathon wins. Fatigue might be a slightly larger factor for Muchova who’s past two wins have been long, and she’s spent quite a bit of time on the court this tournament already. But her two previous wins are very impressive, having knocked off Osaka and Sakkari. Her confidence should be at an all time high heading into the semifinals, but if she’s going to win, she’s going to want to do it in straight sets. If this were to go to a decider, Pavlyuchenkova might be able to sweep in and take the win.

The Pick: Muchova (-162) OR Muchova 2-0 (+163)
