Chelsea is hosting Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinals.
Chelsea is undefeated in their last 5 games, and I knew they could go far in the Champions League, but I thought the semifinals were out of their reach. In the EPL, Chelsea is close to securing their Champions League spot for next season, and they are now in 4th place with 61 points. In their last game against Fulham this past weekend, Chelsea has had 48% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 1 corner kick, 3 big chances created, and 85% of the correct passes. It wasn’t their best game, but Chelsea was effective in the attacking end, and they have played good defense. With 1 scored goal in each half, Chelsea has won this match 2-0, and their morale is high ahead of this Champions League game. Giroud is the leading goalscorer for Chelsea in the Champions League with 6 goals, but I don’t think he will be in the starting lineup in this game. Werner has added 3 goals and 2 assists. The only questionable player for Chelsea was Kovacic, but he will be ready for this game, and that will be a huge boost for Chelsea. The first leg ended well for Chelsea, and even though they don’t need a win here, I think they will need it because Real will do everything possible to go to the finals.
Real is on a fantastic run, and they are undefeated in their last 19 games, but this will be a tough game for them. In LaLiga, Real is in 2nd place, and they are still in the title race, but they are facing Sevilla in their next game. In their last game against Osasuna at home, Real was the dominant team with 65% of ball possession, 6 shots on goal, 7 corner kicks, 4 big chances created, and a solid 89% of the correct passes. It took a while for Real to score a goal, but they scored 2 goals within 4 minutes in the second half. Real Madrid has won that game 2-0. The good news for coach Zidane is that he is getting Ramos back for this game, but Varane is injured alongside Carvajal and Mendy. Hazard got back on the pitch this past weekend, and he has had a solid game which will be important for Real Madrid in this match. Benzema is the leading goalscorer for Real in the Champions League with 6 goals. Modric added 3 assists. Zidane was resting a few players in their last game, and that could prove to be crucial in this game. A 0-0 draw is not enough for Real Madrid which means they will need to attack from the start, but they will also need to stay focused on the defensive end against a dangerous Chelsea team.
Chelsea has never beaten Real Madrid in the past. Both teams are in good form, and while Chelsea hasn’t lost in their last 5 games, Real is undefeated in their last 9 away games, and 19 games overall. I think this will be an interesting game, a fun game with fast soccer and a lot of chances, but I think Chelsea will advance to the finals where we will be watching an English finale.
