Hungary hit by loss of star man
Hungary made the knockout stages at Euro 2016, having not qualified for a major tournament for 30 years previously, but they have plenty to do if they are to repeat the feat this summer.
Dead-ball specialist and star player Dominik Szoboszlai’s late withdrawal from the squad was a massive blow and that could dent any hopes of the Magyars progressing.
Champions bolstered by fresh talent
Portugal exceeded expectations when they won the last European Championship five years ago, taking France to extra-time in the final before winning 1-0, and they played a pretty conservative style of soccer under Fernando Santos.
Their squad has since been freshened up since with Ruben Dias, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Joao Felix coming in and, even though they are in a tough section, they look poised to make a fight of their title defense.
France looks the team to beat
There is little not to like about 2018 World Cup winners France, which plays effective rather than pretty football under Didier Deschamps.
In Kylian Mbappe Les Bleus possess the best young player in world football and the recall of rejuvenated Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema after six years away from the national team adds another dimension to their attack.
Their squad depth is unparalleled and midfield dynamo N’Golo Kante gives the team’s more creative players a license to express themselves. They are the team to beat.
Germany may be in for a surprising struggle
Euro 2020 will be Joachim Low’s final tournament as Germany head coach and it is unlikely to be a memorable one.
Die Mannschaft have been in transition since winning the World Cup seven years ago and, although veterans Mats Hummels and Thomas Muller are back in the mix, the squad is not as strong as it was in Brazil.
Attacking talents Timo Werner and Kai Havertz are now Champions League winners with Chelsea but there is plenty of weakness to exploit in defense and they could struggle in a tough group.
Euro 2020 Group F verdict
Low seems uncertain of his best Germany team and strong opponents France and Portugal both have the right blends of flair and pragmatism under astute tacticians Deschamps and Santos.
Hungary lacks the quality to make the most of home advantage, so France and Portugal look the teams to concentrate on to progress from this section.
