The San Jose State Spartans and Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors meet Saturday in week 3 college football action at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex. The San Jose State Spartans look for a win to get a game above a .500 record. The Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors need a win here to get back to a .500 record.
The San Jose State Spartans have lost five of their last eight road games. Nick Starkel is completing 54.8 percent of his passes for 702 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. Derrick Desse Jr. and Isaiah Hamilton have combined for 266 receiving yards and one touchdown while Charles Ross has six receptions. The San Jose State Spartans ground game is averaging 100.5 yards per contest, and Tyler Nevens leads the way with 149 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, San Jose State is allowing 22 points and 333 yards per game. Kyle Harmon leads the San Jose State Spartans with 15 tackles, Tre Smith has one sack and Nehemiah Shelton has two pass deflections.
The Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors have won four of their last six home games. Chevan Cordeiro is completing 55.4 percent of his passes for 891 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions. Nick Mardner and Calvin Turner Jr. have combined for 480 receiving yards and three touchdowns while Jared Smart has six receptions. The Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors ground game is averaging 127.3 yards per contest, and Dae Dae Hunter leads the way with 161 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Hawai’i is allowing 41.3 points and 475.7 yards per game. Darius Muasau leads the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors with 18 tackles, Jonah Laulu has two sacks and Pita Tonga has one interception.
It’s not easy to play in Hawaii with the drastic time zone difference, and it’s no coincidence why the Rainbow Warriors have had solid success at home over the years. However, the San Jose State Spartans will be motivated for a bounce back effort after getting smacked by USC, and they’ve had an extra week to prepare for this game. Also, Hawaii has been shaky at best defensively through three games, and that includes being ranked 116th in total yards and 123rd in points allowed per game. San Jose State should have a field day offensively. I’ll lay the touchdown.
