Houston Rockets vs. Orlando Magic News and Notes
A pair of rebuilding teams hook up in Orlando as the Rockets and Magic continue to evaluate what they have for the future.
Houston comes in losers of five straight and ten of their past 11 games after a 29-point homecourt beatdown by the Denver Nuggets. Kelly Olynyk continued his strong play for the Rockets since being dealt by Miami at the trade deadline. The eight-year veteran has taken full advantage of extra playing time for a less crowded team than the Heat. Olynyk put up a team-high 23 points in the loss while adding six boards and a block. The Canadian forward is putting up over 18 and almost eight boards a night in 30 minutes per game with his new team. Jae’Sean Tate added 21 while Christian Wood had a 15-point night. John Wall had ten points but will be rested on Sunday for the first leg of a back-to-back.
After gutting their team at the trade deadline, the Orlando Magic haven’t done much more than the Rockets. Orlando has lost four of five and seven of their past nine games after getting smacked by the Raptors on Friday night. The Magic did get 20 points and nine rebounds from Wendell Carter Jr. The 22-year-old was the main component returning from Chicago for Nikola Vucevic at the deadline and has shown flashes during his time in Orlando. Carter averaged just 10.5 points per game for the Bulls compared to 14.5 a night in 11 games with the Magic. Chuma Okeke put up 14 points and has seen much more opportunity since the deadline.
Houston has covered just once in their past five games, while Orlando has met the spread once four. The Magic has hit the over in four of five following a failed cover, while Houston has gone high in four of their past five. Orlando has covered in 15 of 22 head-to-head meetings with the Rockets, while the over is 4-1-1 in six matchups.
