Joey Lucchesi will start Monday vs. Cardinals

It was unknown who would start for the Mets’ series opener vs. the Cardinals on Monday, but Lucchesi will ultimately earn that honor. It’s not a huge surprise — he’s operated as the team’s No. 5 start this season with Noah Syndergaard and Carlos Carrasco sidelined — but he’s pitched to a disappointing 6.75 ERA to start the year. That said, his advanced metrics paint a different picture. He has been dominant from a strikeout perspective, posting a career-best 12.38 strikeouts per nine innings, but he’s been unlucky from a batted ball perspective. Overall, his 1.49 FIP is significantly lower than his traditional ERA, making him an interesting buy-low target.

The bigger question is if the Mets’ bats have finally woke up. They’ve gone from one of the best hitting teams in baseball in 2020 to one of the worst to start 2021. They did erupt for eight runs on Sunday, so perhaps that was a turning point for this squad.

The Mets are currently listed as +100 underdogs vs. the Cardinals on FanDuel Sportsbook.
