Murray is one of the best athletes in the world, and he had the opportunity to play both football and baseball at the highest level. He was selected first overall by the Cardinals in the 2019 NFL Draft, but he was selected ninth overall by the Athletics in the 2018 MLB Draft. That makes him the only player in history to be drafted in the first round of both leagues.
He spent his first two years at Oklahoma University playing on both the football and baseball teams. He struggled in his first season with the Sooners, batting just .122, but he finished with a .296 average, 10 homers, and 10 stolen bases in his second year. That was enough to get the A’s to draft him in the first round, but they still let him play quarterback for Oklahoma the following season. Of course, we all know how that turned out. He won the Heisman Trophy and eventually went on to forgo baseball for the glory and riches of the NFL.
Murray trying to play football and baseball simultaneously à la Bo Jackson or Deion Sanders would definitely be fun, but expect him to stay focused on playing quarterback for the time being.
