Texas Rangers vs. Minnesota Twins, Analysis, and Picks

Probables: Kyle Gibson (Rangers) vs. J.A. Happ (Twins)

Projected Lineup

The Twins look to take a commanding 2-0 series lead today, after a 6-5 win Monday night.

Kyle Gibson takes the mound for the Rangers, making his seventh start, last pitching in a 4-1 win against the Boston Red Sox on Apr. 29, throwing 98 pitches in six innings of work, one run on three hits and striking out four batters. This season, Gibson is 3-0 with a 2.16 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 20% K rate and a 28.5% CSW rate.

Gibson primarily uses a three-pitch mix consisting of fastball (49%), slider (21%) and cutter (16%). His slider tends to be his go-to pitch for striking out batters. Used in 45.3% of the time in two-strike situations, the pitch has a 40% K rate, 332.4% CSW rate, 46.3% Whiff rate and a 50% PutAway Rate.

He’ll likely face a Twins lineup of Luis Arraez, Josh Donaldson, Bryon Buxton and Nelson Cruz at the top of the order. Donaldson has seen the most success against Gibson, going 6-13 with three home runs.

J.A. Happ will take the mound for the Twins, making his fifth start of the season after a 10-2 win against the Cleveland Indians on Apr. 28, throwing 96 pitches in seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out three batters. This season, he is 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, 14.9% K rate and a 21.5% CSW.

Happ uses a three-pitch mix of fastball (67%), slider (20%) and changeup (13%). Used in 44.5% of two-strike situations, his four-seam fastball is the go-to pitch to put away batters. The pitch has a 24.3% K rate, 32.4% CSW rate, 24.4% Whiff rate and a 42.9% PutAway rate.

He’ll likely face a Rangers lineup of Willie Calhoun, Nick Solak, Nate Lowe and Joey Gallo at the top of the order. Keep an eye on Brock Holt. Holt, projected to bat eight, is 4-18 with two doubles against Happ.

Look for the Twins offense to get to Gibson early. As a team, they rank eighth in batting average with a .244.

Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees News, Analysis, and Picks

Probables: Zack Greinke (Astros) vs. Domingo German (Yankees)

Projected Lineup

The Astros head to Yankee Stadium to kick-off a three-game series after a 2-1 series win against the Tampa Bay Rays. They’ll face a Yankees squad coming off a series sweep of the Detroit Tigers.

Zack Greinke takes the mound for the Astros, making his seventh start of the season, last pitching in a 7-5 no-decision against the Seattle Mariners on Apr. 28, throwing 85 pitches in four innings of work, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out five batters. This season he is 2-1 with a 3.44 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 18.4% K rate and a 27.2 CSW rate.

Greinke uses a four-pitch mix of fastball (44%), changeup (87%), curve (21%) and slider (9%). His changeup the most frequently used pitch to striking batters out. Used 36.4% of the time in two-strike situations, the pitch has a 33% K rate, 19.1% CSW rate, 31.9% Whiff rate and a 56.5% PutAway Rate.

The Yankees will likely deploy a lineup of DJ LeMahieu, Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge and Gio Urshela at the top of the lineup. LeMahieu has the greatest success against Greinke, going 19-65 with five doubles and one home run.

Domingo German will make his fifth start of the season today, last pitching in a 7-0 win against the Baltimore Orioles. He went seven innings, throwing 92 pitches, allowing three hits and striking out six batters. This season German is 2-2 with a 4.05 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 21.6% K rate and a 29.8% CSW.

The Astros will likely roll out a lineup of Jose Altuve, Michael Brantley, Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez at the top of the order. Keep an eye on Yuli Gurriel. Projected to bat sixth, Gurriel is 4-6 with one home run against German.

With two high-powered offenses, look for plenty of runs against two pitchers with hard-hit rates above 30%.
