Despite a pandemic that canceled sporting events and shortened seasons, the state of New Jersey is inching closer to an all-time record year in sports betting handle.

The New Jersey Department of Gaming Enforcement reported Monday that $931 million was bet in the state in November, setting an all-time monthly sports betting handle record for any state for the fourth straight month.

It put New Jersey over the $5 billion mark for the first time, making the Garden State only the second to do it. Nevada did it in 2018 and 2019, when it set an all-time yearly record handle of $5.3 billion.

That record too will be short lived. With a hefty diet of NFL games and the NBA regular season kicking off at the end of the month, New Jersey figures to end 2020 north of $5.7 billion in total sports bets. That would represent a 25% bump from 2019, when the state pulled in $4.55 billion.

Nevada is not close to New Jersey this year, which has beaten them every single month. Nevada has been hampered by lack of tourism due to COVID-19, and in-person registration to open an account, a requirement in the state.
