Oddsmakers Move Trojans Forward After Helton Firing

Clay Helton USC Trojans Background

  • Sportsbooks build Trojans after Helton’s dismissal
  • USC’s national title odds continue stable after loss
  • BetOnline listing Oregon’s Verdell fifth on Heisman list

In a surprise move so early in the season, USC athletic director Mike Bohn fired Trojans head coach Clay Helton on Monday, just two days after USC succumbed to Stanford, 42-28, in a game dominated by the Cardinal.

Oddmakers had plummeted USC after the loss to Stanford as the Trojans were sitting at (+1200) to win the Pac-12. After Helton’s firing, USC was moved to (+900) with Oregon still out in front as the favorite at (+160).

Online sportsbooks post UCLA (+425), Arizona State (+450) and Utah (+500) behind the Ducks and ahead of the Trojans.

Helton, who finished at Southern Cal with a 46-25 record, was replaced by associate head coach Donte Williams.

Fight On!

USC rebounded in the Pac-12 South as well after falling to (+400) after Saturday’s loss. The Trojans moved back forward to (+300) odds with UCLA (+225) and Arizona State (+260) ahead and Utah Just on their heels at (+330).

The Pac-12 North is continuing to be Duck territory with Oregon now firmly ensconced with (-185) odds to win while Washington, even with the two losses, staying at (+210). Amazingly with the Helton firing, all of the futures in Pac-12 South improved after yesterday when Arizona State had better odds (+400) than UCLA (+450).

The Trojans fell to (+15000) to win the national championship, but the sportsbooks were undeterred in this area as USC stayed at (+15000) after the news on Helton.

Trojans Restart Trek

After a tough night against the Cardinal, quarterback Kedon Slovis posted (+7500) odds which were down from (+3300).

Please Note:
The numbers remained unchanged after the Helton firing as oddsmakers are unsure how the coaching change will affect various players.

USC wide receiver Drake London already has 16 catches for 205 yards and a touchdown. He now is posting odds in the Heisman race as he is sitting at (+15000).

A Trip to the Palouse

Donte Williams’ first game as the interim-head coach comes on Saturday when the Trojans venture to Washington State to battle the Cougars.

Most sportsbooks had USC opening at a 9.5-point favorite; however, the line has dropped to USC (-8.5) in most places, but it has dropped as low as (-8).

Ducks Signaling Hope for Pac-12

Oregon’s 35-28 win over Ohio State on Saturday could be a springboard for the Ducks or maybe a Pac-12 national sleeper to make their way into the BCS National Championship this season.

Oregon moved to (+2500) to win the national title after Saturday’s win. The No. 4 Ducks still have a way to go in the eyes of the oddsmakers and the bettors as Ohio State (+900) is still at fifth and popular with bettors.

The Ducks’ movement can also be seen on BetOnline.ag where Oregon is at (+2200) with Ohio State (+1000).

Please Note:
BetOnine.ag also has the same familiar teams at the top, but their odds are somewhat different as Alabama nets a (-165) number while Georgia is beginning to move on Alabama with the Bulldogs posting (+325).

Oklahoma (+650) is fourth after dismantling FCS opponent Western Carolina, 76-0. Clemson (+900) is fourth as the Tigers rebounded off the loss to Georgia with a 49-3 win over an FCS challenger as well in South Carolina State.

Heisman Reboot

Oddsmakers at BetOnline.ag have posted Oregon running back C.J. Verdell at (+1400) odds to win the Heisman Trophy. Verdell’s number is the fifth best positing on the board.

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young leads at (+275) while Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral (+400) has moved all the way to second this week after he moved from (+1500) at the beginning of the season to (+800) when he threw for 381 yards in the Rebels’ win over Louisville. Corral made his move from (+800) to (+400) over the weekend when he threw for 281 yards and five touchdowns in a 54-17 win over Austin Peay last weekend.

Spencer Rattler is third at (+700) while Ohio State freshman C.J. Stroud (+1000) is still fourth after passing for 484 yards vs. Oregon.

The ‘Pac’ Behind Verdell

According to BetOnline.ag, the rest of the Pac-12 field for the Heisman is termed longshots although we know that stringing together some big games, high numbers and wins can net immediate love from oddsmakers and bettors.

  • Jayden Daniels of Arizona State stays at (+4000) while USC quarterback Kedon Slovis is catching (+5000) odds here although we noted earlier how he had fallen on many other sportsbooks.
  • UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Oregon quarterback Anthony Brown are sitting with Slovis at (+5000).

UCLA running back Zach Charbonnet (+6600) and Oregon’s defensive freak Kayvon Thibodeaux (+8000) are the round out the players listed. Thibodeaux did not play in last week’s win over the Buckeyes.
