The St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet Sunday in MLB action from PNC Park.
This will be the third and final matchup in the series between these teams this weekend. The Cardinals notched a four-run win on Friday, then in the Saturday game St. Louis bagged a huge seven-run win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
St. Louis had their offense working in the Friday victory, and they scored well in an eventual 7-3 result to kick off the series. On Saturday, the Cardinals bagged 15 hits in a rousing 12-5 win. Starter Jack Flaherty went 6.0 innings with six hits and three earned.
For the Sunday game, the Cardinals will send out Carlos Martinez in the start. Over his five outings so far this year, Martinez has 28.1 innings, 23 hits, 16 runs (15 earned), two homers allowed, seven walks, 17 strikeouts and a 4.76 ERA overall.
Over on the Pirates’ side, they couldn’t get much going at the plate on Friday, posting just three runs on four hits. In the Saturday game Pittsburgh did okay on offense but couldn’t stop the Cardinals from scoring. The Pirates’ Colin Moran had three hits with two RBI and a run.
For Sunday’s starter role, the Pirates are sending out Wil Crowe. So far this year in two games (one start), Crowe has 4.2 innings, five hits, two earned runs, four walks and five strikeouts. He held a 0.77 ERA in 11.2 innings over five games this spring as well.
The Cardinals are 1-5 in their last six in game three of a series and 7-3 in their last 10 as a road favorite. The under is 4-0-1 in St. Louis’ last five in game three of a series and 21-10-3 in their last 34 Sunday games.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are 5-0 in their last five in game three of a series and 25-61 in their last 86 versus a team with a winning record. The under is 10-3-2 in Pittsburgh’s last 15 Sunday games and the over is 6-2-1 in their last eight at home.
PICK: I’m going to take a shot on the Pirates here. Martinez has some extra weight on his shoulders in the Cardinals rotation right now due to Adam Wainwright’s absence, but he’s coming off a victory over the Phillies on Tuesday. It was Martinez’s first win since early July of 2018. That said, Crowe has looked okay in limited action so far this year and if he’s on Pittsburgh should have some opportunities to stay in the game.
