There was a lot of debate leading into the draft about what the 49ers were going to do with the No. 3 pick, and they ultimately settled on Lance. He played just one exhibition game last season, but the 49ers reportedly still think very highly of him. ESPN’s Adam Schefter said that the 49ers believe Lance is a “smarter” QB than Mac Jones, and they also think he’s more ready to contribute more in year one.
This is an interesting development for the team. It was believed that they planned to keep Jimmy Garoppolo under center in 2021 before handing the keys to the offense to Lance the following season, but they may not be interested in waiting if they think Lance is ready to play. The 49ers are reportedly asking for a first-round pick for Garoppolo, and it seems unlikely that anyone will be willing to pay that at this point. The Patriots have long been considered the frontrunners for Garoppolo, but it remains to be seen if they’re still interested after drafting Jones with the 15th pick.
Regardless of who is under center, the 49ers are expected to be much more competitive in 2021. They’re currently listed at +1400 on FanDuel Sportsbook to win Super Bowl LVI, which is the third-highest mark among NFC teams.
