The Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres meet Monday in MLB action at Petco Park.
The Pittsburgh Pirates need a win to snap a four-game losing streak. The Pirates have scored eight runs in their last three games and four or more runs in four of their last seven games. The Pirates have won nine of their last 11 games when scoring four or more runs. Adam Frazier leads the Pirates with 31 hits and 10 RBI while Bryan Reynolds and Colin Moran have combined for 55 hits and 31 RBI. Tyler Anderson gets the ball, and he is 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA and 26 strikeouts this season. Anderson is 4-2 with a 2.53 ERA and 46 strikeouts in his career against the Padres.
The San Diego Padres look for a win after winning six of their last nine games. The Padres have scored 10 runs in their last three games and four or more runs in five of their last eight games. The Padres have won six of their last eight games when scoring four or more runs. Eric Hosmer leads the Padres with 32 hits and 17 RBI while Jake Cronenworth and Trent Grisham have combined for 53 hits and 14 RBI. Miguel Diaz gets the ball, and he was 0-0 with a 7.11 ERA and four strikeouts in the 2019 season. This will be Diaz’s first career game against the Pirates.
The Pirates are 9-19 in their last 28 during game 1 of a series and 14-37 in their last 51 road games. The Padres are 1-5 in their last 6 vs. National League Central and 4-1 in their last 5 overall. The over is 20-6-1 in Pirates last 27 Monday games. The under is 12-2 in Padres last 14 home games. The Pirates are 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in San Diego and 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.
The San Diego Padres should probably be the favorite here, as they’re the better team and playing the better baseball, but they’re throwing out a pitcher in Miguel Diaz, who hasn’t pitched since 2019 and is coming off knee surgery. The Pittsburgh Pirates have issues of their own and are riding a four-game losing streak, but Tyler Anderson has been decent this season and has given the Pirates chances to win. I’ll take a shot with the Pirates on the road, as I’m not backing Diaz on the mound until he gives me something recent.
