San Francisco 49ers Sign Maurice Hurst

A year after their defense led them to the Super Bowl, the San Francisco 49ers defense fell off a cliff last season. The 49ers hope to address some of those defensive woes by signing Maurice Hurst to shore up their defensive line. Hurst played the first three seasons of his career with the Raiders organization but fell out of favor this past season and was waived last week.

Hurst started 10 games in his rookie campaign but only seven over his next two, including three last season. In 2021, Hurst recorded 27 tackles, one pass deflection, and 0.5 sacks, which was the lowest of his career. Pro-Football-Reference set Hurst’s Approximate Value (AV) at 2, the lowest mark of his three-year career.

San Francisco ranked 22nd in the NFL last season with 30 sacks but was above-average against the run, allowing 106.4 rushing yards per game.

The Niners draft third overall in the upcoming NFL Draft and were originally thought to be interested in Justin Fields. The prop market has adjusted over the last few days, with Mac Jones now chalk to be drafted by the Niners.
