Ohtani was initially scheduled to take the mound Monday vs. the Rays, but he has been scratched due to elbow soreness. Elbow soreness is always a major concern for starting pitchers, but Ohtani was hit by a pitch on the elbow on Sunday. Hopefully, the soreness is just a result of that and there’s no structural or underlying damage.
With Ohtani out of the lineup, Jose Quintana will draw the start instead. Quintana has struggled this season, posting a 10.13 ERA through his first four starts, but he has undoubtedly been unlucky. Opposing batters have posted a .432 batting average on balls in play against him, so he’s due for some positive regression. His 4.64 xFIP still isn’t great, but it’s a much truer indicator of how he’s pitched so far this season.
Unfortunately, he’ll have to square off with one of the best pitchers in the American League on Monday. The Angels are taking on Tyler Glasnow, and they are unsurprisingly +138 underdogs on FanDuel Sportsbook in that matchup.
