  • Fans are now trying to decide what is next after Eddie Alvarez’s loss via disqualification.

ONE Championship held one of its biggest events in months last night and aired it live in the United States. As many are now aware, Eddie Alvarez was controversially disqualified during his bout for striking the back of his opponents head. Today, we’re going to talk about what Eddie Alvarez’s loss means for his career moving forward.

This event proved to be one of the more unusual ones in recent memory. The main event also saw pound-for-pound great Demetrious Johnson knocked out.

Here’s what you need to know about what went down last night.

Recapping All of the Action at ONE on TNT 1

ONE Championship has established itself as one of the top mixed martial arts promotions on the planet. It’s managed to sign some of the best fighters on the planet and has been holding fantastic events on a regular basis. ONE held a stacked fight card last night that featured both Demetrious Johnson and Eddie Alvarez.

This was one of the most highly-anticipated events in ONE’s history. Fans and members of the MMA media were eager to see if Johnson could earn his first world title in the promotion. Most online sports betting sites had “Mighty Mouse” as a significant favorite heading into fight night.

Eddie Alvarez was also looking to earn his second-straight victory in the promotion. Alvarez had a hugely successful career in both Bellator and the UFC and there was an expectation that he would become a champion in ONE. He was set to take on Iuri Lapicus, a tough striker riding an impressive win streak.

This event ended up being one of the more unusual ones in the promotion’s history. Demetrious Johnson was knocked out in the second round against the champion, Adriano Moraes. This knockout came by a knee to the head on the ground; a technique that is almost universally banned throughout the US.

Eddie Alvarez also suffered a loss on this card. Unlike Johnson, however, his defeat came via disqualification after landed a pair of punches to what the referee claimed to be the back of his opponent’s head. It was a disappointing ending to what was becoming an exciting bout.

Since the event, fans have been left wondering what is left for Eddie. Here are some of the possibilities for the proud Philadelphia native.

Here’s What Could Happen After Eddie Alvarez’s Loss

Eddie Alvarez is one of the true veterans of the fight game. He’s been competing as a professional since 2003 and has won titles in some of the biggest promotions in the world. That includes the UFC and Bellator lightweight championships.

Many fans expected that Eddie would find immediate success in ONE Championship. This simply wasn’t the case. He lost his first fight with the promotion and had to pull off a come-from-behind victory to earn the win in his second bout.

Yesterday, Alvarez suffered another loss with the promotion. This one didn’t come due to his opponent’s strengths, though. Instead, Eddie was disqualified against Iuri Laipicus for landing illegal strikes on his opponent. You can check out a clip of this situation below.

It was perhaps the worst-case scenario for Eddie. He appeared to be winning this fight and may have earned a shot at the lightweight title with a victory. He spoke with the media shortly after the fight and claims he has no plans to retire.

“You guys are fascinated about my age. I’m not. I started the sport when I was 19. I’m two decades in and I’m learning new stuff every day, I still love it, I’m still infatuated with it. I wish people would stop asking me about retirement and my age,” Alvarez said.

The most-likely scenario now is for ONE to schedule a rematch between these men. Many fighters disagree with Eddie being disqualified and a second bout seems like the best course of action. We’ll be sure to offer more updates on this possible fight over the next few weeks!

Here’s Where to Find the Best MMA Odds for This Weekend

Many are now asking where they can bet on all of these matchups. BetOnline is one popular option to fans in the US. This site is known for its safety and offers some of the best MMA odds online right now.

The Bellator main event between Ryan Bader and Lyoto Machida is drawing in a huge number of bets. Bader comes into this fight as the -300 favorite. Machida has a win over Bader on his resume dating back to 2013, but enters this contest as the +240 underdog.

Saturday’s UFC main event between Marvin Vettori and Kevin Holland is also appealing to many bettors. Vettori had a full training camp and enters this fight as the -365 favorite. Kevin Holland is as game as they come, yet he’s coming off a loss and comes in as the +290 underdog in this fight.

There are some fantastic events scheduled to take place over the next few months. ONE Championship is scheduled to hold its next show on April 14. Stay tuned for betting breakdowns of these cards as they draw closer!
